The Southern Kaduna conflict has become one of the most pressing challenges in Nigeria, given its protraction and intractability. Successive governments have grappled with ending the conflict through a series of inquiries and white papers issued in response to their recommendations. However, the conflict has proved daunting because its triggers are often far removed from its underlying causes.
It is for this reason that it has become imperative to critically reflect on those underlying causes and to develop sustainable, long-term solutions rather than responses aimed only at the immediate flashpoints. This report sets out to do exactly that.
Drawing on field research and community dialogue, the study surfaces the layered grievances — historical, economic, political and religious — that sustain the conflict, and maps the pathways through which communities themselves believe a durable peace can be built and owned.
The triggers of the conflict are often far removed from its underlying causes — which is why lasting peace requires addressing the roots, not only the flashpoints.
